Jan C. Grutters (1966) studied Medicine at the University of Nijmegen, and was trained in Respiratory Medicine at St. Antonius Hospital Nieuwegein and University Medical Center (UMC) Utrecht, the Netherlands. In 2001 he was awarded an ERS Research Fellowship at the Imperial College and Royal Brompton Hospital London, resulting in the Thesis: ‘Genetic polymorphisms and phenotypes in sarcoidosis’. Since 2002 he works as chest physician at St. Antonius Hospital, where he is head of the ILD Center of Excellence (currently treating more than 3000 ILD patients per year), and UMC Utrecht, where he is member of the Lung Transplant Team. From 2009 to 2011 he was head of training Pulmonology & Tuberculosis at St. Antonius Hospital. In 2010 he was appointed Professor of ILD at University Utrecht. His research focuses on genetics, biomarkers and novel therapies for lung fibrosis, sarcoidosis and ultra-rare ILD such as lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM) and pulmonary alveolar proteinosis (PAP). Jan Grutters has been/is supervisor of more than 20 PhD students, published over 200 papers in international scientific journals and books, and is regularly invited as speaker and/or chairman at national and international medical/scientific congresses, seminars and meetings. Besides he is the chairman of the Section of ILD of the Dutch Association of Physicians in Chest Medicine and Tuberculosis (NVALT), chairman of the Professor Swierenga Foundation, and member of numerous national and international scientific and medical advisory boards.
